📚 4 Prompts for DumbGPT

Learn how to effectively use prompting when GPT is underperforming

3 Min Read Intensity: ☕️ ☕️

Surprise Tuesday, Caffeinators 👋

Although GPT recently lost some of its stride, that doesn’t mean you should. Here are 4 effective prompt strategies that can enhance your productivity!

Today’s Starting Sips:

  • 💔 Break Apart Tasks

  • 🥚 Use Examples

  • 👎 Downvote Responses

  • 🌡️ Crank Up the Temperature

1 - Break Apart Tasks

Instead of having GPT generate a lengthy essay, try separating out ideas into individual paragraphs.

I know, I know, you need to put in a little more work. But, I promise the results are way better!

For example, say I want to generate a 300-word essay on “why dogs are better than cats”. Instead of just asking GPT for exactly that, I can generate three 75-word paragraphs on specific arguments, then string them into an essay format.

See how GPT did below. Pretty solid response on the first try 👏

2 - Use Examples

GPT loves examples! It thrives off of them!

There are multiple ways to do it. My favorite is feeding GPT a specific writer’s work, so that GPT composes content in a unique style.

Want an idea of how Shakespeare would declare human’s imperative need for coffee? Here’s how I did it:

Shakespeare agrees to drink more coffee 🎭 ☕️

This is just one way!

You can try feeding in more sentences, samples, or authors’ styles. The possibility is endless!

3 - Downvote Responses

Your vote matters with GPT! OpenAI is constantly getting better by receiving and utilizing feedback from users.

If you downvote a response, GPT will provide a different one. In my experience, if you don’t like the original response and down vote, 9/10 times the alternatives are better than the original.

In fact, I made use of the downvote button while making an example of the second strategy!

The new answer captures the essence of Shakespeare better

For those people who are struggling to find the voting buttons, they are on the right side, as shown here:

You can also upvote too 👍

4 - Crank Up the Temperature

A lot of times, GPT is more rigid and less creative in responses than some might expect, but did you know there is actually a setting for that?

This is listed as the temperature for GPT, and gives you a creativity scale from 1 to 10 to explore.

Here’s an example of when I set GPT to a relatively high temperature!
