Should AI development be a arms race? OpenAI invest millions in AI safety

Happy Monday, Caffeinators☀️
Today’s Starting Sips:
📊 ChatGPT is a Secret among US Adults
🧊 Is AI Development a Race or a Risky Skate on Thin Ice?
🔒 OpenAI's New Mission: Cybersecurity and Democracy
🤓 Let’s see Some City Stereotypes
In a recent poll, Pew Research Center played "Do You Know?" with U.S. adults about ChatGPT. Turns out, 42% of U.S. adults were left scratching their heads. Yup, 42% had never heard of ChatGPT, the most famous AI chatbot! I mean… How?
But, it gets better (or should we say worse?). Only 14% have used it, and somehow only 5% found it handy for work! 1 out of 20!! 🫢

Remember, this survey was only conducted in the U.S. - the land that gave us Apple and Tesla. If this were a global survey, we'd be checking if folks thought ChatGPT was a fancy salad dressing.
And yet, this could be the universe's way of telling us that we're not ready for AI to go mainstream. With AI safety still a hot topic, perhaps this ignorance is bliss… for now.
AI is advancing at a rate that's got even its creators a bit twitchy. They're watching machines pen novels, ace exams, and create art, then thinking, "Wait, how far is too far?"
These brainiacs even put a number on it: there's a 10% chance of an "extremely bad" outcome. That includes… wait for it… human extinction! (But hey, only 10% 🤷♀️)
The main risk is developing an Artificial General Intelligence (basically an AI that is as smart as or smarter than humans) that pursues a different goal than humans.
Fame and money-driven researchers and investors think AI development is like a high-stakes arms race. But it is really more like a sprint across thin ice?
If we all move with care, we'll all get across, safe and sound. However, sprinters could crack the ice and send us all into a chilly bath.

Meanwhile Elon… 🤡
At least, some prominent figures, including Bill Gates and Sam Altman, are on the same page. They have endorsed a statement drafted by the Center for AI Safety.
The message is clear: let's treat AI risks like we do pandemics and nuclear wars - increasing worldwide regulation and awareness is key to everyone’s safety.
Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.
🔒 OpenAI's New Mission: Cybersecurity and Democracy
Soon after Sam Altman’s hearing in Congress, OpenAI started making it rain with million-dollar programs aimed at ramping up AI safety!
OpenAI is recruiting forces with defenders around the globe to refine AI cybersecurity.
OpenAI has cooked up project ideas from luring attackers into honeypots to coding secure software. A well-worn axiom in cyber security was echoed by OpenAI:
Defense must be correct 100% of the time, attackers only have to be right once.
But OpenAI’s ambition isn’t capped at cybersecurity; they are fixing AI biases through democratic processes.
OpenAI believes that AI should evolve with the public interest and not be controlled by one entity alone.
They're rallying teams worldwide to create prototypes for cybersecurity and democratic decision-making, emphasizing the importance of AI safety.
So, if you've got the vision, it's time to join forces with OpenAI and shape the future. (see links in the title)
Fun Tip of the Day: City Stereotypes
Today, we are asking GPT about stereotypes for each city!
With the help of Midjourney, we’re able to create photos that fit the stereotypes just right. Enjoy!
Seattle

Space Needle, rain, rain jacket… too accurate!!!
San Francisco

Always sunny at the Bay ☀️
Denver

Hike at 5000+ feet elevation 🥾
New York

One word… Cool 😎
Tampa

Sunshine State and beaches 🏖️
Chicago

Only 6 out of 10 US adults heard of ChatGPT and 5% of the population is using GPT for work
Among AI creators, they’ve agreed that AI risk is on par with global pandemic and nuclear warfare
OpenAI has created million-dollar programs for cybersecurity and AI democracy
Use GPT + Midjourney to create funny stereotypes for any location
If you enjoyed this article, I think you will like this one too! It is about Sam Altman’s hearing on May 16th.
Spoiler Alert! It was waaaay different from Mark Zuckerberg’s.
Until next time,
